Job markets chill for some

As Autumn sets in, the weather’s not the only thing that’s cooling down. Recent data shows that the UK’s job market is losing steam, and some groups are getting hit harder than others. The Guardian reports that recent graduates, along with workers in healthcare and teaching, are bearing the brunt of hiring slowdowns as employers pull back and reassess roles.

Graduate job postings are down about 35% year-on-year, with August alone seeing an 8% drop. Meanwhile, healthcare and teaching vacancies also declined by 6.7% and 6.4% respectively.

What’s driving the chill?

1. Cost pressures & caution

Businesses are tightening budgets. Rising costs mean firms are more cautious about opening new roles and entry-level roles are being cut.

2. Automation and AI

Automation is nudging employers to reconsider how many roles they need, and where judgement and human oversight remain essential.

3. Experience bias

In tight markets, hiring managers often feel the safer option is to recruit candidates with proven experience. Not great news for graduates who can’t demonstrate long track records!

Looking ahead

The job market may be cooling, but it isn’t collapsing. There’s still demand, just not uniformly. For companies that adapt, especially in sectors unaffected by declines, there’s a chance to capture top talent at lower competition and build loyalty in tough times.
